CODE CLUB

Eddie from Victoria University has started up our Code Club again with interested students. Eddie will be working in each class for one session over the next term and introducing them to some exciting computer programmes like Makey Makey and Bristle Box. He then teaches coding to two groups of students in our school library. This is an exciting opportunity for students – a big thank you to Victoria University for making Eddie available to us.

GOLD CARD AWARD

Congratulations to Psalms Tuitama from Room 8 for being a Learner / Leader in class well done Psalms!

SCIENCE NEWS

Science is more than doing experiments. Science is working alongside a freshwater ecologist who is researching and monitoring the habitat of freshwater mussels (Echyridella menziesii) known to Maori as kakahi, kaeo, and torewai. What does this mean?  It means walking into a lake, standing in 1metre depth of water, using your feet to feel for the kakahi in the sand and picking them up to identify the species of mussel endemic to NZ.  How cool is that? Mrs Makisi loved the learning about real life science on a recent field trip to Wairarapa Moana. She jumped in the lake, investigated, asked lots of questions and collected samples of kakahi.  She found the kakahi on the right hand side in the picture; it was longer with different markings on the shell to the more common variety on the left.

Science is so cool, it is happening all around us.  In these holidays, go outdoors and do some science.  Collect some leaves, look closely for patterns, shapes and colour variations.  Describe and talk about what you see, hear, smell, taste and feel.  That is what good scientists do.  Take photos as evidence and share with Mrs Makisi your findings on joanm@avalonintermediate.school.nz.
