AVALON INTERMEDIATE NEWSLETTER 28/06/2018
SCHOOL DATES
The end of term 2 is on Friday 6th July finishing at 2.40pm.
Term 3 begins on Monday 23rd July at 8.45am.
Please note the earlier closing time of 2.40pm will continue for at least the first 2 weeks of term 3.
END OF TERM ASSEMBLY
Our End of Term Assembly will be held on Tuesday 3rd July at 1.15pm next week. It is an opportunity to celebrate student achievements throughout the term. Parents and whanau are welcome to attend.
PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT INTERVIEWS
If you were unable to make the interviews Tuesday and today please contact your child’s teacher and re-schedule. We have the expectation that every student will have had one of the three-way conferences. A big thank you to all families who came to their child’s interviews.
EARLY FINISH/MUFTI DAY – FRIDAY 29TH JUNE
A reminder that school is closing at 1pm on Friday (tomorrow) because of the Teacher Union Meeting. Students are allowed to wear mufti to school and there is no charge for this mufti day. Please contact the office if your child needs to stay at school in the afternoon.
POLYFEST
Good luck to our Polyfest Group who are performing on Wednesday night 4th July at Walter Nash Centre. Miss Poasa, Matua Jonas and Matua Jeremy have been working alongside our students and we are looking forward to seeing them on stage.
AWARDS
Deputy Principal’s Award
Congratulations to Hera Thompson who received the Deputy Principal’s award this week. Hera comes to Literacy Study Centre every week and has been working very well in these sessions.
Dental Visit Stats
The Bee Healthy team visited our school in Term 1 and have provided us with some statistics of the 109 children they examined. 40 of these students had tooth decay which is 37% of those examined. One of the simplest ways to reduce tooth decay is to drink lots of water and milk rather than fizzy, energy, fruit, or flavoured milk drinks. Reminder that only water is allowed at school
CROSS COUNTRY
The AIS inter-school cross country team had our best ever results at Newlands Intermediate on Monday 25th June. Quentin Housan made it through to the next round of Wellington Regionals with a brilliant 3rd placing in Year 7 Boys. Other great individual results include Nik Kiri placing 12th in the Year 7 Boys, and Fletcher Troke placing 16th in the Year 8 Boys. It was a tough 2.5km course including hills, and a lot of mud.
Gold Card Draw
Tufaina won the Gold Card Draw this week for Attending to her work in class. It is great to see so many gold cards in the draw each week – there are lots of students making great choices at AIS.

Swimming Term 3
Just a heads up, the school swimming programme will again happen in Term 3. This is a very important school programme where we would like all students to participate as many still can’t swim well. Please note this and have the conversation with your child about taking part.
Buses
We are still having some teething issues with the buses, hopefully it will not be too much longer before things will settle down.
