TERM 2 - WEEK 4 05 May 2020

AVALON INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

Ratu 5 o Haratua - Tuesday 5th May

Term 2, Week 4

Kia ora koutou,

Alert Level 2 Planning

I hope you are keeping well and safe in your bubble. We are beginning to plan and prepare for what Alert Level 2 will look like at Avalon Intermediate. More guidance and information for this will come later in the week from the Ministry of Education. As you will know, the Cabinet will meet on Monday 11th May to decide whether NZ is ready to move down to Alert Level 2, and if they do when schools will open again for all students. That announcement will be made on Monday afternoon and our newsletter on Tuesday next week will give more information around this.

What’s been happening this week?

We have 4 students attending school for Level 3 and lots more students who now have devices are able to access our Home Learning Programme and resources. Our staff are still responding and supporting students who are working at home.

Home Learning Programme

Some of the feedback we received over the past two weeks was that parents found it difficult to know what students should be doing online. The work we assigned was in each students’ Google Drive so the students knew how to find it, but it wasn’t easy for families to see. We have now set up a Google Site (the link is in our school website) that has learning tasks for Weeks 4 and 5 on it. We will update this site every two weeks so students will always have plenty of work and our staff has worked in teams to create purposeful and relevant learning experiences. We hope that you and your child find this useful.

How to find the Home Learning Programme:

  • Click on the Home Learning Programme link

Once you have opened the site, it will look like this:

The headings across the top have drop down menus, which show where you can find the different curriculum areas and options. Each of these areas have tasks that students can do for the next two weeks.

Google Drive:

Our teachers have put activities into the students’ Google Drive folders. Instructions about where to find these tasks are explained on the Home Learning Programme site. If you are still finding it difficult to find the work that teachers have set, please email your childs’ classroom teacher and they will either call you or organise a Google Meet, to talk you and/or your child through this.

Challenge #4 Winner - SOMEONE SPECIAL

Mrs Robinson had the difficult task of selecting a winner for our 3rd Lockdown Challenge. We enjoyed learning about all of the people who have been special and important in your bubbles. Well done to you all! We will put all of the entries onto our Facebook page. Congratulations to Ariana Cains, the winner this week. Ariana has written a heartfelt message about one of our staff members who helped to support her during the lockdown. Well done Ariana, you have won a $30 Prezzi Card which we can give you when we return to school.

CHALLENGE #5 - BUILD A BLANKET FORT

Our challenge this week is for you to build the BEST blanket fort for you and your siblings to hang out in. Think about how you can be creative so that it is a comfortable place for you and the whanau to chill out in. When you are finished, send through a photo of you hanging out in the fort!

Please send entries to principal@ais.school.nz by 5pm on Monday 11th May.

(Mr Connochie will be judging the entries this week)

Keep warm in this cold weather and take care!

Nga mihi nui,

Ariana Te Whetu
