TERM 3 - WEEK 1 24 Jul 2020

Rapare 24 o Hongongoi - Friday 24th July 2020

Term 3, Week 1

It is lovely to welcome our staff and students back to school this week. I hope that you all had a wonderful break and the chance to spend some quality time with the whanau! We have a really busy term ahead and lots of exciting opportunities coming up.

Healthy Relationships

Our main topic area this term is based on ‘Healthy Relationships’ and has been designed to address a number of aspects that have been challenging for our students and the school, since returning from the COVID-19 lockdown period. The aim of the activities and learning opportunities this term is for students to learn about and practise effective personal and interpersonal skills. With explicit teaching of interpersonal skills, wellbeing and the capabilities of Resilience, students will be supported to be positive in their own identity and build their confidence to interact appropriately and respectfully with others. Our teachers will be looking at integrating these ideas across their Literacy, Mathematics and Health and PE lessons.

Maths and Literacy Study Centre

Maths and Literacy Study Centres have started again and these will be run on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. We currently have spaces available for students to join these groups. If you would like your child to attend either Maths Study Centre (Tuesday) or Literacy Study Centre (Wednesday) they run from 2:50pm - 4:30pm in our school library. Students will need to get a permission slip from the school office. These sessions are run by Josie Sitigata and Shekyna Lolouta. Josie is a teacher aide who works at our school and Shekyna is a Year 13 student from a local college.

End of Term 2 Assembly

Thank you to the families who were able to join us for our End of Term 2 Assembly. Congratulations to all our students who received awards at this special assembly, you should be pleased and proud of your achievements. The end of term gold card draw was won by Aziza Wilton, Danazhaye and Maia - who took home bluetooth headphones, a wonderboom speaker or a board game for the holidays.

Winter Sports

Our winter sports are well underway now and it is great to see so many students participating in these sporting activities. This term we have:

Saturday Netball (Joan Makisi is our netball coordinator)

Wednesday Basketball (Stuart Crafts is our basketball coordinator)

Wednesday Waterpolo (run by Stefan Poad)

Thursday Badminton (run by Ariana Te Whetu)

It is really important that students attend all games and practices - well done to our Year 8 basketball team and their coach Patrice Reremoana for meeting twice during the school holidays to get some extra training sessions in at Walter Nash! It was great to see you down there!

Interschool Sports

Avalon Intermediate attends all of the Wellington Intermediate Interschool Sports competitions. In Terms 1 and 2 these were all cancelled because of COVID-19 but this term they will start up again. Students who want to be considered for these teams will register their interest with the teacher running the event, trial (if numbers are high) and then permission slips are sent home once teams have been selected. The dates for the interschool sports tournaments are included in the Term Planner below.

2020 Donation Scheme

A reminder that our school has opted into the Ministry of Education donations scheme which means we do NOT charge a donation this year. There is a take home fee for Technology (Wood, Art, Food, Fabric, Multicraft) of $80 and if students are participating in extracurricular sporting activities there is often a small fee but these are the only fees that will be charged this year.

Avalon Intermediate Year 6 Open Evening

We are holding our Open Evening on Monday 27th July from 6pm - 7:30pm for Year 6 students and families. If you know of parents who are interested in enrolling their child at our school next year, please encourage them to come along to this next week.

Staffing Update

Travistine Cook is leaving us at the end of this week to take on a role at an international school in Abu Dhabi. Trav has been a wonderful addition to our team, she is a great Music teacher, has warm relationships with all of the students, has coached sporting teams and is a valued member of our staff. We wish her as she moves onto this next stage in her journey - safe travels!

Welcome to Gemma McLean who will be working in Rms 6 and 7 on Mondays and Tuesdays this term. Gemma will be helping with beginning teacher release in these classrooms and we are really pleased to have her on our team.

Nga mihi ki a koutou,

Ariana Te Whetu, Principal
