NEWSLETTER NO. 3 - 19/2/15
INDIVIDUAL CLASSROOM MEETINGS
Thank you to all families who came with their child to this week’s meetings. It was great to see the support from the 3 classrooms so far. Room 3 is tonight at 6pm.
Next week’s meetings are as follows: starting at 6pm. These meetings will be held by the classroom teacher and students and will take approximately one hour. The expectation is that all students will attend and be represented by at least one parent. So far we have had excellent student and parent/caregiver turnouts. Well done to all concerned.

PERSONAL HEALTH & HYGIENE
Now we are enjoying warmer weather please could you support us in ensuring your child is staying healthy by checking clothing is changed for sport and that with all the exercise they are getting at school they are showering regularly.
Also could you talk to them about the importance of drinking plenty of water and keeping themselves hydrated. We have water fountains around the school.
If your child suffers from asthma and it is brought on by exercise they need to use their inhaler before exercise.
READING TOGETHER WORKSHOPS
We are offering Reading Together workshops on Mondays evening this term. We have sent home a separate letter today with students that we think this would be suitable for. If you did not receive a letter and you are interested in attending, please contact the Deputy Principal – Ariana Silao at school. Her phone number is 5677 453 ext 803.
HUTT CITY COUNCIL MEETING FOR ROOM 7 (only)
On Wednesday 25th February at 6.30pm a launch event will be held for the William Pike Challenge at Avalon Intermediate. Come and listen to William’s real life account of being critically injured on Mt Ruapheu.
MUFTI DAY – FRIDAY 27TH FEBRUARY
We will hold a mufti day next Friday – gold coin donation to support the Life Flight Trust Wellington who have done a great deal lately in supporting a very long serving AIS member’s family. The Young Leaders and BOT felt this was a very good and appropriate way for AIS to support the Life Flight Trust who do great things in our community.
SPORT
Our school-wide athletics sports day will be held at school on Tuesday 24th February. Parents/caregivers are welcome to come and watch.
SCHOOL STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS
These will be sent home with your child. It will show payments already made and those still owing.
PRINCIPAL’S AWARD/GOLD CARD
Congratulations to both Tessa Ravenhall R7 who won Mr Hastie’s Principal Award and Lupe Sauila, R4 our winner of the lucky draw gold card for this week. Well done!!
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS
School-wide teacher/parent/caregiver/student interviews will be held on the afternoons/early evenings of 18th and 19th March. Please could you ‘pencil in’ these dates on your calendar. More information will come home nearer the time.
STRUGGLING TO UNDERSTAND YOUR TEEN?
Karen Elliott, our school social worker is organizing a two hour presentation on Unraveling the Mystery of the Adolescent Brain. The presentation explores the brain changes that help adults understand manyof the adolescent behaviours. Some of the topics covered are: Transition from child to adult, second phase of brain development, physical changes including sleep pattern changes and social and emotional changes.
