WEEKLY HOT TIP

Bad Influence

It’s so obvious…a child is influenced by his/her friends.  Mischief is contagious, peer pressure is powerful!

Children often choose friends they think they resemble.  If you want to get an insight into how your child sees themselves look to see who they choose to hang out with.  If they are hanging around with those on the edge of things who are a bit antisocial that might be how your child sees themselves.  Their self-esteem determines their friendships and so anything you do to improve their opinion of themselves will in time improve their friendships.

It is hard to criticize or forbid friendships – they can be very loyal to their friends.  It is better to displace the friendships with new ones.  Give your child extra social opportunities such as getting them involved in clubs, hobbies, sport, scouts/guides and so on where they will be a good range of other kids to form relationships with and dilute the negative influence of their old friend …

Maybe your child’s friends aren’t as bad as they seem.  Treat your child’s friends well and make your home a place kids are welcome to hang out at.  That might be hard on your ears, hard on your fridge, hard on your carpet but easy on your mind as you can maintain influence and contact not only with your own child but with their friends as well.
