NEWSLETTER NO. 20  - 23/7/2015

Welcome back to term 4.  Year 8s you only have two terms of your Intermediate years left;  please take advantage of what we offer you at Avalon Intermediate so you are prepared for College next year.

Yesterday you all received a letter outlining the fees needing paying for swimming, mathletics, technology and camp.  I am pleased that we have had a number who have paid all of these already into our school bank by just paying a regular, nominal amount.  Invoices for the $90 cost of school camp are also being sent home today.  Please note camp is part of the school-wide curriculum as is the swimming programme.

It is great to see families supporting their child to fundraise for school events by selling chocolate bars.  Thank you to those of you who have sold and returned the money promptly to school.  We still have boxes of chocolates to sell and for every box of chocolates totaling $60, $24 of that amount will be credited to your child’s activities as per the letter sent home yesterday.

This is an online maths programme that caters for all levels of ability.  It also helps students enjoy maths and improve their results.  All students, once they have paid the $5, will get their own log on and be able to access the programmes.  Permission forms will be out shortly for the swimming and the mathletics programmes

For families who pay by automatic payments into our account and are in credit, once the permission form is received for your child the ($30) swimming and ($5) mathletics will be deducted from your payments.   If you would like to pay by automatic payments we have forms in the school office.

Dates:  Monday 10th August – Rooms 1 & 7

             Tuesday 11th August – Rooms 2 & 6

             Wednesday 12th August – Rooms 3 & 5

             Thursday 13th August – Room 4

Please note these important dates - we are hopeful of a full turn out of parents/caregivers.

Waterpolo:  a most convincing win against Chilton. Fantastic playing!

Basketball:  Starting Monday 27th July all our classes will participate in a number of basketball sessions for 45 minutes each.  This is a 5 weeks agenda similar to the cricket and rugby programmes.

Netball: this will run for two weeks from Tuesday 28th July and will give all students the opportunity to learn skills that will help them for all ball sports.

You have received a letter home outlining the puberty unit which will be taught school-wide from 27th July.  If you do not wish your child to participate  please ring the Deputy Principal Ariana Te Whetu on 5677 453 ext 803.  (There is a message service on this line).

This will run all term and all students will have nine 45 minutes sessions working with post graduate students from the University.  This is an exciting scheme that will see students upskill themselves with computer work.  Initially students will be working with the “Scratch Programme”.  There is no charge to our students for this and we are delighted to be given this learning opportunity.

These will take place for Room 2 on Wednesday 29th July and Room 7 on Wednesday 5th August.  They will be visiting Te Papa and possibly the National War Memorial.  No cost for these trips.

Congratulations to Genesis Kiliatea from Rm 2 who started the term in a positive way by winning the gold card draw for this week.
