Thank you to those families who have replied to their letters and have made contact with the school.  Once we return to school for term 4 the camp dates will come around very quickly.  Please, we ask you again if you have chocolates/money outstanding as per your letter, can you get this all completed by the end of next week.  We do not want to take this into term 4.

The Young Leaders are organizing a disco evening for Avalon Intermediate students to be held next Wednesday 23rd September.  There will not be door sales on the night.  Parents/caregivers need to sign a permission form. Further information will follow.  Please support this school-wide event.  It will be a fun evening for those invited students.

Basketball Results:  Some very favourable scores this week.  Well done to the basketball teams especially the Yr 8 boys who finished in 1st place after beating St Bernards.   It was an amazing game.  Avalon girls were placed 2nd after a hard battle with Sts Peter & Pauls and the Yr 7 boys came 3rd after beating St Bernards.  Thank you to our basketball coaches, these results could not have been achieved without your help – Licia Wharewera, Ti Watson and Shaun Taylor.

Waterman’s Rugby Tournament: On Wednesday this week the Avalon First XV participated in the annual Waterman’s rugby tournament.  First we played Maidstone Intermediate and won 5 -0.  Then we played Raroa Intermediate

and won 22-12.  We played South Wellington Intermediate in our 3rd pool game and won 15-10.  Next it was time for finals football.  We had a close encounter with Newlands in our semifinal that went into golden point.  Our boys showed some brilliant and resilient defence and eventually turned the ball over to score in the corner.  We had won the semi final by 5 points!  Next stop was the final versus Naenae Intermediate.  The boys were pumped and ready for action however so were our opposition.  Naenae snuck home in the end to win the tournament leaving Avalon in 2nd place overall.  I was happy to be coaching such a motivated, talented and disciplined group of students.  Also thanks to Henry and Mish for helping with trainings and organization.  Matt Jackett.

Swimming: Congratulations to Charlotte More  who was the top swimmer in NZ for her age group (11 years) over the months of May and June.  Charlotte was top points getter with 3825.  Fantastic result Charlotte.

The Life Education programme has started and will continue on through next week.  The programme is a follow on from our Puberty Unit and DARE sessions relating to students making informed choices about their health and to develop life skills and strategies in relating to other people.

Next week is the final week of this programme.  We have been very fortunate to be given this opportunity and the students have really benefitted from the learning that has come out of the different sessions.  We thank Victoria University for giving us these great learning opportunities.
