SWIMMING

The final swimming lesson will be tomorrow and it will be a special session around water safety skills.  We are pleased that so many students took up this opportunity for lessons and teachers have given positive feedback about the programme. It was great to see so many students working positively in the pools with instructors. It would be great if our students continue to develop their swimming skills by practising themselves, a reminder that they can use their Magic Cards to get free access to Stokes Valley or Naenae Pools to do this.

NMSSA VISIT

This week the National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement assessors were in school interviewing and testing a group of students. It was slightly tricky to timetable the assessments and interviews because of swimming and technology, but the students managed really well. Thank you to those students involved and their families for your support in this programme.

Value Each Other

SPECIAL GUEST – KENNY MCFADDEN

A special thank you to Kenny McFadden who came and spoke at our assembly about the importance of education. His message was simple – education must go hand in hand with gifts in sports or any field a person chooses. Kenny played for the Wellington Saints and has also had mentoring roles, working closely with Steven Adams.

A reminder that Kenny is running a 2 hour “Whanau Fun Streetball” session on Saturday 8 September from 12pm – 2pm at Walter Nash – get along if you can!

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S AWARD AND GOLD CARD WINNER

Congratulations to Wesley Faitele for receiving the deputy principal’s award this week. Wesley is always positive, polite and caring – he is an asset to our school!

Well done to Devontae of room 6 who won our weekly gold card draw – great work!

MATHLETICS

Mathletics is an online maths learning programme, which we use at school to support classroom teaching. Our BOT paid for the programme so our students have access to this for 2018. Students can use this programme at home – if there is a computer they can use at home then please encourage them to work on this. Each student has their own login and password.  The website is www. mathletics.co.nz

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE

We have a new public health nurse, her name is Nikita Hunter and she will be visiting our school on Friday mornings. Nikita has met with our staff and already helped us with medical issues for some of our students. Nikita is with us to help with student health and wellbeing and can support teachers with health education topics in the classroom.  If you have any issues or concerns about your child’s health that you would like Nikita to help with, you can contact the classroom teacher or the office.

FLU

Attached is a flyer detailing the current Flu outbreak that is going around. Please ensure that you keep them home if they are showing these symptoms to avoid spreading to students & teachers.

Also a list of Pharmacies that has a free Sore Throat Clinic. If your child is showing any of these symptoms it is important the they are seen to by a health professional

Never Give Up

MATHS STUDY CENTRE

Mathematics Study Centre runs every Tuesday after school. Awesomely, this year we have seen a massive increase in number of students who routinely attending every week. As a result, Mr Flockton and Mr Thompson have seen a really pleasing amount of learning progress from all those who come along. We learn lots, explore different mathematics and always have fun. Students are encouraged to bring problems they are working on in class along to Study Centre, so they can learn how to solve them (and feel more confident in doing so). Maths Study Centre students are keen to learn, which means that everyone helps each other out! If you are interested in attending Maths Study Centre, or would like your child to, please speak to your classroom teacher or Mr Flockton.
