THE LAST WEEKS OF 2018

As we head into our last 6 weeks of 2018 (we have 31 school days left) it is important that a conversation is had at home around expectations at school. This time of year can be challenging with colleges finishing early and the good weather keeping students out later. Parents/caregivers having this expectation conversation with their child are helpful to us as we continue to push to get students learning levels improved before our final National Standards decisions.

GOLD CARD AWARD

Congratualtions to Danaka for winning the Gold Card Draw this week. Danaka is a positive, supportive and hardworking students at our school – well done!

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S AWARD

Joseph Viliamu and Tamanna Amin received this award for sharing their powerful speeches with over 100 people at The Living Wage celebration last Thursday night. Joseph and Tamanna shared their speeches with the school at the End of Term 3 Assembly and again last week. We are incredibly impressed with the quality of their writing, their oratory skills and the way in which they engage the audience. Ka mau te wehi!

LIVING WAGE CELEBRATION – HUTT CITY COUNCIL

Thank you to the students who performed at this celebration last week. We opened the evening with a range of Tokelauan, Samoan, Tongan and Maori dancing. Later in the evening, Tamanna and Joseph delivered their speeches and the school band, Kotahitanga, also performed. It was great to be able to share some of the great talents that our students have. Thank you to our parents for your ongoing support with these performances.

TAITA CRICKET CLUB

We have Taita Cricket Club working alongside our students on Mondays for the next 6 weeks. The club have provided coaching sessions for all classes and will be teaching a range of skills and drills in cricket. We hope that those students who live in Taita/Pomare area and enjoy cricket will consider joining the Taita Cricket Club – it is a great summer sport!

Statements were sent home last week; please note that compulsory technology and sports fees need to be paid this term, along with any other outstanding fees. If you have any queries please feel free to call the Office on 5677453.

BEACH EDUCATION PROGRAMME

We have organised a beach education programme for all students in the final two weeks of this term. Students will participate in a full day surf life saving course at Lyall Bay. They will look at the Surf Club, learn how to identify and escape a rip current and do other beach games and activities. We need 1 adult for every 5 students to ensure our students are safe. A newsletter will come out next week about this, please let us know if you are able to help out, or if there is a family member who would be able to come along to support our students. The dates are Monday 3^rd December (Rm 1, 3) Monday 10^th December (Rm 2, 5, 6) and Tuesday 11^th December (Rm 7, 8, 9).

 CLOSING OF SCHOOL LIBRARY FOR 2018

Because of a stocktake of library books required for our annual audit the library will be closed from 26^TH November.  It is important all books are returned before this time.  Please start a look around home for any AIS library books and return them to school asap.  Thank you.

HUTT CITY LIBRARIES SUMMER READING CHALLENGE ‘THE BIG READ’ 2018-19

International research shows the 'summer slide' (where reading gains slip over the long summer holidays) is a major barrier to on going literacy achievement Tamariki who have access to books and learning experiences during the long holidays show less of a decrease (or even an improvement!) in their reading levels when they return to kura/school. The Big Read motivates tamariki to read books and participate in activities. Our friendly librarians are always available to provide support. Any child aged 0-12 years can sign up for the challenge at any of our eight Hutt City Libraries from 1 December. The entire whanau can join in, this year we have The Little Read for ages 0-5 years; The Big Read for ages 5-12; and Explore, Read, Relax for rangatahi and adults. It’s a great way to support your child’s reading and help them maintain the reading achievements they have made throughout the school year, even while on holiday! KIWI HOOPS CAMP

We are super excited to announce the first of our Kiwi Hoops Camps coming to the Walter Nash Centre. This is a fantastic opportunity for 7-12 year old boys and girls to PLAY, LEARN and HAVE FUN under top youth basketball coaches. Read on for more info and how to register.

WHAT: Kiwi Hoops Camp, Hutt Valley WHEN: Saturday’s 10th and 17th of November, 9am-12pm.

WHERE: Walter Nash Centre WHO: Ages 7-12, girls and boys from the Hutt Valley

COST: Free!  Kiwi Hoops Camps have a core focus of teaching fundamental movement and basketball skills through games based learning. Players will learn how to move like a basketballer, while developing their ball control, dribbling, passing, catching and shooting skills through fun games. Whether your son or daughter is a seasoned player or a first timer, role model coaches will ensure your child feels safe and included, all while learning key skills to enjoy sport for life.
