AVALON INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

Term 2 Week 1

IAN HASTIE PRINCIPAL RESIGNATION

Just a follow up to yesterday’s letter home in case you didn’t receive it from your child. I am resigning as Principal of Avalon Intermediate as of the end of Term 2. After 20 years as Principal it is timely. Ariana Te Whetu our Deputy Principal will lead the school as Acting Principal through until the end of the year. The Board will appoint the new Principal later in 2019.

TERM 2

We welcome all students back for another very busy term.  The term ends Friday July 5th, with Queen’s Birthday on Monday 3rd June.  Students have 49 days of learning ahead of them.  We expect all students to maximise these learning days by being at school and on time.

Winter Sports and Inter-school sports will also keep many students busy.  Both basketball on Wednesday nights and netball on Saturdays will require students to be very organized both for practices and games.  The expectation is that all students will be available to practice and play. These sports are in our catchment area (Taita Courts/Walter Nash) so as a school we are very visible.  All AIS students need to represent the school very positively at all times.

Inter-school sports this term are, Cross Country, Boys and Girls Football, Hockey and Rugby League, a very full schedule!

SCHOOL UNIFORM

With the colder weather now on its way it is important that all studentscontinue to wear correct, clean school uniform with the correct low cut sneakers.  AIS is all about setting high standards – it only takes 1 or 2 to make the standard drop.  Remember all uniform must be clearly named please. Do not wear coloured T-shirts under Polo Shirts – only black or white thermals are acceptable under the Polo shirts. No Skins are to be worn under shorts, we have trackpants available.

MAGIC CARD, THE WALTER NASH CENTRE AND TAITA CLUBHOUSE

A reminder that all AIS students should have magic cards for local libraries and pools.  It is important that all students are using the Magic Card regularly. The Walter Nash Centre and Clubhouse are great resources for our students and I remind parents/caregivers again that we want students using these facilities regularly and appropriately to give our students extra opportunities to learn. New Magic Cards have been issued yesterday.

Also featuring Arohanui Strings – Sistema Hutt Valley. We have some tickets available which will be issued on a ballot basis, please call the office if you are interested.

SCHOOL BUSES

We are currently having issues with buses arriving late to pick up students which I am following up. We are also having issues with one or two students not behaving on the buses by ringing the buzzers when they shouldn’t. We have spoken to the bus students today and would appreciate it if parents could also have the expectation chat. This has seen the buses go past bus stops as the driver thinks it is a joke, then students have to walk sometimes a great distance to get home.

Please note the tuck shop is closed tomorrow it will reopen on Monday

Reminder that the school is closing early at 12.30pm on Tuesday 7th May to allow teachers to attend a union meeting. There will be no maths study centre on this day.
