Term 3 - Week 2 01 Aug 2019

AVALON INTERMEDIATE NEWSLETTER – 1/8/2019

Tena koutou katoa

We have had another positive week and students have been busy with Life Education, Technology and getting into our inquiry for the term Changes and Challenges. Next week our Year 8 students will go to Taita College on Wednesday 7th August to look at their careers expo. Thank you to Taita College for inviting our students to be part of this and for organizing transport.

825 BUS RUN – WEDNESDAY 31ST JULY

Unfortunately the school bus didn’t complete the full bus route, which meant that some students were not picked up yesterday in the morning run. We immediately contacted the bus company and let them know of our concerns and they have apologized for the error. I spoke to all of the students at assembly yesterday and have asked them to talk with their families about what to do if this happens e.g. walk home if someone is still there or catch the next public bus coming past, as well as reminding students already on the bus to tell the driver if the driver has gone the wrong way or missed their stop.

PRINCIPAL’S AWARD AND GOLDCARD DRAW

The Principal’s award went to Janelle Hawkins (Rm 1) and Aaliyah Campbell (Rm 1) for being wonderful helpers at our school.

The Gold Card was won by Shontayne Rm 2 & Moe Myint Rm 1 for making positive choices and helping to make our school a great place.

HEALTH CONSULTATION SURVEYS

We had 43 responses to our health consultation over the past week, thank you all of our families who gave feedback on our health programme at AIS. The results from these surveys will be published in our newsletter next week. At assembly yesterday we had two draws for the $50 Pack n Save vouchers which was very exciting for the students in the draw – congratulations to the families of Marie Moses and Aziza Wilton for winning this prize.

MAGIC CARDS

Reminder to all students to continue to use their Magic Cards at Hutt City Libraries to earn great rewards and Hutt City Pools to improve their swimming skills. If students have lost their card please come to see Michele or Leanne in the office.

SCHOOL SWIMMING PROGRAMME

We have sent our final copy of permission slips for the swimming programme home today. These were sent out to families who have not yet indicated as to whether their child will be participating. Thank you again to our BOT who have agreed to fund the costs of the swimming programme this year, this is very much appreciated.

MUFTI DAY – FRIDAY 2ND AUGUST

Our Rangatira (student leaders) have organized a mufti day this Friday to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of NZ. The money raised will go towards the purchase of a cough assist machine, which supports people with weakened muscles to be able to cough sufficiently and clear their airways. Unfortunately these devices are not funded by the DHB and $10,000, each which is extremely expensive for many families. Students at AIS are asked to bring a gold coin to support this worthy cause.
