Welcome back students to another term of hard work! Remember year 8s this is your last term before you start College so make the best of it both in attending to your work, behaviour and making good choices. Take responsibly for your own actions!!
TERM 4 EXPECTATIONS
Term 4 has 44 school days left and my expectations are that all students will be engaged alongside teachers improving their learning. This is an important term with a great deal happening. It also brings challenges for some with students interacting after school with other students because of the warm weather and daylight saving. A good thing is a number of students are using the Walter Nash Centre to further their learning in this time. It is helpful for us that students get home quickly, have something to eat, do any homework, change and then head out. Structures like this assist us with the learning at school.
TERM 4 LEARNING
The priority for term alongside our literacy and numeracy programmes will be a topic called “Enterprise”. This will see students making and designing products and working through all the requirements that a small business may encounter when making a product. It will culminate in a Market Day where the products will be ‘sold’. We have carried out this topic previously and it was very successful. The Market Day will be held at school in week 7. We will remind you later in the term of the date and time.
TIMEKEEPING/ATTENDANCE/UNIFORM
The requirements here are all students are at school unless sick, they are here on time before the 8.45 bell and they are in full school uniform including a school hat for term 4. We set high standards and the expectations are all students will meet these high standards. Lateness has already been an issue for some this week as is uniform standards. We want to be the very best intermediate so let’s get it right!!
COL (COMMUNITIES OF LEARNING)
You will all by now be aware of the C0L’s that are being set up around the country. Our local schools including AIS signed an expression of interest to work together alongside another group of school from the Naenae area. Theoretically we are two groups of schools who have shown an expression of interest but we are classed as a CoL. What this means is that the Taita and Stokes Valley Schools, including Taita College are working together to see if we can find common ground around learning that will see us working together as a CoL. Obviously I will keep you informed as developments progress and if we get it right it could be very exciting for our area.
NORTH EAST PATHWAYS INITIATIVE
You are aware that we have been involved in this sports initiative with Sport New Zealand and the Hutt City Council for the last two years. This initiative has seen AIS students fully involved in many sports activities over this time. We have received excellent coaching both for students and teachers and many AIS students have become more involved in sports and it has improved their engagement in other learning areas, which has been helpful. Each year our students and teachers complete a survey around this project and there is also a parent survey which will come out shortly for you to complete. We have been very fortunate to be part of this project so it would be really good if we get a good parental response to the survey.
BEES Tomorrow an Apiscope will arrive at school full of honey bees which will be installed into Room 1

The Apiscope will have a funnel through the glass into the outdoors which will allow the bees to ‘do their business’. The Apiscope is transparent and therefore students will be able to see the bees interacting inside the hive. I have seen one operating before and this is very exciting for AIS. Newlands Intermediate School already have one and AIS and Manakau School have been selected to have another installed. With our garden and fruit trees close by this adds to our environmental approach to learning at AIS.
SCHOOL HATS
We remind you hats are compulsory for terms 1 & 4. If you have one please can you refresh the name and if you haven’t they are available in two sizes from the school office $15 each.
